Sea Coast Adventure 03/12/2022

Today’s adventure took us to the Irish seacoast. We had heard about the coastal village of Howth, also known as Binn Eadair. As mentioned before, Rick Steves said no visit to Ireland would be complete without a visit to this peninsular village. Howth has been settled since prehistoric times and has been a fishing village since the 14th century. Howth fell to the Normans in 1177 and after this victory, the Lordship of Howth was granted to Sir Amorey Tristam of which his descendants, under the name of St. Laurence, have continued possession to this very day. Tristam built the Howth Castle and it is the oldest occupied dwelling by one family in all of Ireland.

Howth was the location where Erskine Childers, in 1914, landed 900 rifles to be used by the Irish Volunteers during the Easter Rising of 1916. These weapons were later used in the Anglo-Irish War..

Today, with its turbulent history in the past, it is now a charming seaside village. It is a mecca for hikers, bird watchers, and city dwellers who just want to escape to the shore for the weekend. This is where we come in. We took the train to Howth and spent the day walking around the village. The weather was great. I think Linda and Amanda visited every booth in the market. I sat on a bench overlooking the harbor and Harry shot all the pictures in this post. After the ladies finished at the market, we had a very good seafood lunch at Crabby Jo’s restaurant. Then, as all adventures end, we boarded the train and returned to Dublin. We walked along the River Liffey back to our hotel. The weather became a little blustery as the evening approached, so we decided to eat at the hotel. Another good day, a great meal and 18,000 steps.
