Titanic Experience 03/16/2022
Well, we came to terms with our positive Covid test and decided that issue would not be resolved until Friday afternoon at the Dublin airport. We feel good, we have a nice apartment, and we came to see the Titanic Museum. So that is what we did. The museum was not crowded at all, very sparse, so we decided we could wear our masks and easily maintain a safe distance from others.
The Titanic Museum is not really a museum, but more like a Titanic experience. It is a giant building about the size of the Titanic. The presentation is all about the Titanic. They tell you the story of the Titanic from beginning to end. There is no bigger story and no better place to tell it than the place where the ship was built. The Titanic Experience is a world leading tourist attraction. It will leave you with a better understanding of the conception, the construction, and the people that built it. It is located in the shipyard where the Titanic and Olympic were built side by side. The White Star Cruise line owned the Titanic. Construction began in 1908 and she was launched May 31, 1911. Construction was complete March 1912. She began her maiden voyage on April 10, 1912 and hit an iceberg and sank on April 12, 1912. There was a loss of life of over 1500 people. It shocked the world. The presentations you will see cover all aspects of the Titanic. We spent about 3 hours at Titanic exhibit. There were a lot of artifacts from that era, but none from the Titanic after she went down. If your travels bring you to Belfast, place this on your to do list.
After leaving the Titanic we walked back into Belfast. We went past a display of a giant salmon. Imprinted on tiles that made up the salmon were items of interest and the history of Belfast.
Next we walked by the Albert Clock Tower. This tower was built in1869 in honor of Prince Albert, the late consort of Queen Victoria. It is one of the best known landmarks in Belfast. Two things of interest about the tower. It was used as a meeting place for ladies of the night when the dock workers got off work and came to town. The second was, when built, it was constructed on a marshy land fill. As the earth settled, so did the clock tower. It was canted about 4 feet before they were able to strengthen the base. I asked if the same person who designed the tower, designed the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
We stopped by Ste Anne’s Cathedral, across from our apartment. Ste. Anne was built in 1899 and serves as the Belfast Cathedral. It was heavily damaged in 1941 by the Germans.
We had a full day and ate dinner at the Yard Bird Pub. (outside) This pub is located in a timber frame building from the 1680’s. Their specialty is free range rotisserie chicken. I could not tell the difference. The chicken was good. I am going to close now. Tomorrow should be an interesting day…St Patrick’s Day.
